Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

What happens in a session? Do I have to lie on a couch?
Sessions begin with a period of solution-focused coaching. This helps you to focus on what we call your 'preferred future': how you want your life to be. This helps the brain form new behaviours and habits and lowers anxiety. After this, the client rests on a treatment couch (or chair, if preferred). They relax whilst listening to positive language patterns and restful music. Hypnotherapy produces the same brain activity as REM sleep, so clients are able to drift away and feel very rested and positive afterwards. Between sessions, you are encouraged to listen to our relaxation download every day.

How many sessions will I need?
As individuals are all different, this is a tricky question! Sometimes, two or three sessions is adequate. However, the aim is to achieve lasting change, rather than a 'quick fix'. The average is 6-12 appointments, with many of our clients seeing improvements from the first session. We never retain clients for longer than is necessary, although some stay with us and visit monthly because they enjoy it so much!

How much does each session cost?
Sessions are priced at £75 for 45 minutes. Do ask about our block-booking discount.

Why should I see you instead of a counsellor?
Many clients come to us after they have tried other types of therapy. Solution-Focused Hypnotherapy is highly effective in a short period of time. It is also very positive and, apart from in consultation, where you will share any information you feel is important with your therapist, you do not need to revisit or go over difficult or challenging life experiences. This is why people choose Solution-Focused hypnotherapy over counselling, because it is about how you want your life to be, rather than dwelling on the problems of the past. It is also cost-effective, as, although hypnotherapy generally costs more per session, clients will need significantly less sessions to recover.

What do people come to see you for?
Clients have a wide variety of challenges they are facing, including personal development (wanting to be more confident, better at public speaking etc), anxiety, a sense that they have 'lost themselves', lack of motivation, or the challenges more classically associated with hypnotherapy, including smoking cessation, weight-loss, or a phobia, such as flying. We also have an excellent record for dealing with insomnia.

Where can I see you?
I work from Saturn Fitness and Wellness, Abingdon and also offer Zoom appointments from the comfort of your own home.

Can hypnotherapy really help my child?

Yes, many children have been helped by hypnotherapy. Children respond very well, as they have vivid imaginations and are able to imagine themselves behaving differently and making different choices very easily.

Why might a child or teen come to see you?

Common challenges children and teens face are anxiety, stress, overwhelm and lack of confidence. In today's busy world, most children could benefit with deep rest and relaxation to combat stress and overwhelm. We have many clients who attend during school holidays to recharge after a busy term!

Can I stay with my child during a session?
Yes, of course and parents find it very relaxing! Before working with children, they will come, with a parent, for a consultation (free of charge). This gives them an opportunity to meet the therapist and for the parent to ask any questions that they may have. Older children may not wish for the parent to be present and each case is judged individually. All parents will need to sign permission form before work can begin.
Julia is fully insured and DBS checked, for your peace of mind.

I don't think they can stay still for 45 minutes! Does that mean you can't help them?
Many children (and adults) would find it hard to stay still for 45 minutes! Sessions are tailored to fit the individual. Children are often lively during treatment, popping up with questions when you think they are completely relaxed, but this does not mean that it is not effective.

About the therapist:
Many hypnotherapists say that they can work with children and young adults and, of course, anyone with a hypnotherapy qualification can. However, it takes great skill to build rapport and trust with a young client and their family and yet the effectiveness of treatment depends on it.

Julia is a qualified teacher and has been supporting children and families with their mental health and wellbeing for over twenty years. She is fully insured, a member of several professional bodies and is DBS checked for your peace of mind. Julia is also an Award Verifier and Advisor for the Shaw Trust and Optimus Education national 'Wellbeing in Schools Award'. She has run Confidence and Building Self Esteem workshops for the Youth Offending Team and provides mental wellbeing training for schools. She is a specialist in the area of challenging behaviour and received a Scholarship at Harris Manchester College, Oxford University, writing a paper on Storytelling, Spirituality and Mental Health.
